Management in Occupational Health at Ecopetrol S.A. has the following fundamental objectives:

  • Managing the identification, prioritization, treatment and verification of the health conditions of the workers in the business units.
  • Managing intervention in work environments in order to eliminate or minimize risk at the source.
  • Design and advise on the implementation of Industrial Hygiene and Ergonomics recommendations, to build healthy work environments.
  • Develop and update epidemiological surveillance systems that provide us with information on the interaction between work environments and the health conditions of the working population.

Industrial hygiene at Ecopetrol includes the recognition, evaluation and control of (physical and chemical) hazards that originate in the workplace and that can be the cause of occupational diseases. The stages of industrial hygiene that are applied are as follows: monitoring in the field to characterize chemical and physical jobs. Data analysis. Intervention plans for trades evaluated as critical and establishment of preventative and corrective actions according to risk analysis. Measurements to determine the effectiveness of the controls applied.

Ergonomics studies the interactions between human beings (workers) and the elements of a work system, making the system adapt to the characteristics and capabilities of the worker while maintaining or improving its efficiency and productivity. Ecopetrol has developed a diagnosis of ergonomic conditions in work environments through the evaluation of jobs and characterization of trades. Subsequently, intervention plans have been structured based on intervention at the source and medium for the control of ergonomic risk, which in turn generates healthy work environments.

Preventative and occupational medicine at Ecopetrol includes all activities aimed at promoting health, preventing, detecting and controlling occupational diseases and the consequences of occupational accidents, and the process of rehabilitation of workers in relation to work and the work environment.

Occupational epidemiological surveillance is a system that integrates the information of the work environment and the individual, of those issues or relevant aspects to monitor in order to analyze the information, establish prevention and control measures, monitor the effectiveness of these intervention measures, disseminating the information with stakeholders as necessary, and providing feedback to the system in order to establish opportunities that contribute to continuous improvement.
